Before designing a database for an organization, several steps are taken. These steps are not a necessary part of actual database design.
However, they ensure that the task of designing and implementing a database gets completed successfully. Some of these steps are:

  • Feasibility Study 

Feasibility Study As the process of database development can be costly, a feasibility study is carried out. A feasibility study is a preliminary study where the information needs of users, user requirements, and the benefit of providing a database are evaluated. The goal of the feasibility study is to evaluate different solutions and to propose the most feasible and least expensive solution.

  • Requirement Analysis 

Requirement Analysis This is the most difficult step. The success of a database system depends on how accurately the requirements have been defined.) First of all the data in use in the organization, its format, and its size is determined. Then the information processing capabilities required are specified. The goal of this step is to determine what should be done, not how to do it.

  • Project Planning 

The requirement analysis stage gives an estimate of the resources and the time required to design and implement a database.
Therefore, a schedule for various activities of the database design is laid down. In addition to the time schedule, the costs of each phase of database development are also specified. This step helps in the smooth implementation of a database design project.

  • Data Analysis

It is also an important step in a database design process. In this step, data flow diagrams (DFD), decision tables, decision trees, etc.
are prepared.) These activities provide a basis for preparing a logical and physical data models for the required database.
